WHAT TO CONSIDER BEFORE FILING FOR DIVORCE:

Planning for your divorce both financially and emotionally will eliminate a great deal of frustration for you.  For example, if you plan to move out of the marital home, consider what you and your children need from the home in the coming months, including clothes for all seasons, medications, and identification and birth certificates.  Don’t leave behind any items such as photographs or mementos with great sentimental value.  If your spouse destroys them, no judge can replace them.  On the other hand, if you plan to stay in the marital home, and you depend upon your spouse to pay the mortgage or rent, consider filing for divorce after the mortgage or rent has been paid for the month.  That will give your attorney time to get in front of the judge to get ongoing financial support for you and your children.
